Citizen Releases New Single “Blue Sunday” Ahead of the Release of Fourth Studio Album
In 2017, the Michigan post-hardcore outfit Citizen released their third studio album, As You Please, to high acclaim. The album itself showed the band stepping in new directions sonically and cementing them as one of the prime acts in their respective scene today.
Now four years removed from As You Please, the trio hunkered down in the garage studio at frontman Mat Kerekes’ Toledo home to record their fourth studio album, Life in Your Glass World. After releasing the upbeat, dance-rock track “I Want to Kill You” back in January, Citizen has now released the upcoming album’s second single, “Blue Sunday”. The bass and percussion-driven track is more reminiscent of a psychedelic rock track than the alt-hardcore music Citizen has released in the past, like on their 2015 album Everybody is Going to Heaven. With a variation of big hooks and a demanding vocal performance from Kerekes, “Blue Sunday” shows the Michigan trio once again reaching into new sonic directions.
In a statement released with the song and Mason Mercer-directed video, Kerekes shared about “Blue Sunday”: “The song came about once I wrote the bass and drums to the verse for “Blue Sunday.” I sent it to the rest of the band, and then we all got together to do the rest. Everything flowed naturally, and it is one of my favorite songs on the record. It’s essentially about me never wanting to leave my house, and although that makes me happy, it is bad for me in different ways.”
