Hi Gina! How are you?
I’m doing great thank you 🙂
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Germany. As a Eurasian, half Filipina, half German, I grew up in a small town in Germany and moved quite early to the city Hamburg. After living in Hamburg for a bit over a year I moved to Ibiza, Spain. Funny story – went there on vacation with two friends and ended up staying for almost 11 years on the island. Currently, I am based in Germany.
How did you get into singing and voice-over?
I started singing as a kid. There hasn’t been a day where I wasn’t singing or dancing along to some MTV Music videos that were playing on TV. From a very young age, I’ve enjoyed impersonating characters with distinctive voices. I was around 10 years old when I started with classical singing training and got signed to Edelkids records at the age of 14, after sending in my singing and dancing video on – back then – VHS tape 🙂 I was in a children’s band called “Die Lollipops” with whom I recorded 4 Albums. For the movie “Der kleine Eisbär” (Little Polar Bear) I sang 2 songs for the soundtrack which also led then to my first ever voice over job for their audiobooks. My first role was “Piep”, a little cute duck with a very, very high pitched voice.
You speak four languages – How did you learn them?
When I grew up, my mother taught me three languages. She just incorporated them into daily life and spoke German, English, and Filipino with me. I loved learning languages and reading from a very young age. Every time she was on the phone with a family member and I couldn’t understand something, I immediately asked her to teach me. I also enjoyed watching TV shows and movies in English.
And I learned Spanish while living in Spain.
What are your greatest achievements?
Beginning from the gold record for the album “Die Lollipops” to hearing my voice on TV during the commercial break while watching a movie, to social media ads while scrolling through the phone. It makes me very proud. The best is though, to have worked with such amazing people like Peter Hoffmann which was our producer for Die Lollipops who has always made sure that we kids have a hell outa of fun during recording sessions and treated us like family. I recorded songs with Dj Pippi, a legendary Balearic house music Dj, recorded with former Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor, hosted a radio show in Ibiza and voiced commercials for companies I used to see on TV as a kid.
What’s a typical day like in the voice-over business?
There is no typical day as every day differs in requests coming in and recordings taking place. One day it’s a corporate e-learning, the other a cartoons character or kids voice. Which is the beauty of this job. My typical workday starts with checking my e-mails and answering my client’s voiceover’s requests, tea, and vocal warm-up.
What are your favorite types of recordings, do you have a “signature voice”?
I love character voices/animations, Tech is fun, and commercials.
My “signature voice” is smooth, credible, warm, intelligent, articulate, and most of all friendly. I change accents or tone based on the context of the piece or between specific characters.
Is there a company you would like to work for?
Of course! Every voiceover artist would love to work with Disney, Pixar, and Apple!
What is your secret to a successful career as a voice-over artist?
There is no real secret. Be professional and work efficiently. It’s not enough to do funny voices. Remember, you have to bring the script off the page for an audience who can’t see you. Take what differs you from others. Understand that the voice you choose is your brand’s audio identity and never stop training.
Tell us about any new projects you have coming up?
I am currently working on a meditation album, which I’m planning to release this year.
Anything else you want the audience to know about you?
I am also a trained skincare formulator. I formulate my own skincare and I am planning to release my own skincare line in the future.
