Whether it’s the Creature from the Black Lagoon or Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mystic Being has cosplayed a variety of characters. Since discovering cosplay in 2021, the content creator, whose real name is Meagan Starke, has cosplayed over 100 characters. Some of her transformations are inspired by horror films, while others are inspired by comics, games and characters she loves.
Mystic Being has fun doing things differently and bringing her favorite characters to life. Her creativity has also been an important part of her social media career, which now has a combined following of over 7 million across her platforms.
Discovering Cosplay in 2021
Mystic Being started her social media journey in 2020 and first gained widespread attention on TikTok. A year later, she discovered cosplay. She soon became fascinated with dressing as her favourite characters and experimenting with various outfits. Ever since then, cosplay has been a central part of her content.
Her approach is interesting because she doesn’t restrict herself to a specific type of character. She has a passion for anime and Pokémon, but also explores characters from other forms of entertainment.
This has enabled her to try out various outfits, looks and concepts. Despite having portrayed over 100 characters, she feels there are still many characters she hasn’t explored.
From Emma Frost to the Bride of Frankenstein
Some of Mystic Being’s transformations show just how different the characters she chooses to portray can be.
She has appeared as the Marvel Rivals version of Emma Frost, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Bride of Frankenstein and Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They look quite different and belong to different fictional worlds. Some are known for their glamorous appearance, whereas others have unusual or frightening appearances.
For Mystic Being, that diversity is part of the fun. She enjoys portraying characters that people wouldn’t expect her to choose. A fan who discovers her through one character might see a completely different look in her next cosplay. That freedom to experiment is an important part of what she enjoys about cosplay.
Learning to Make Her Own Costumes
In 2023, Mystic Being’s creative journey took another step forward when she began crafting some of her own cosplay costumes. Prior to this, she had already gained experience portraying a variety of characters. Learning to make costumes provided another avenue for her to explore the creative aspect of cosplay.
She has not made all of the costumes she has worn. Instead, she has been learning to make some of her own costumes as she progresses on her cosplay journey. She’d like to continue developing her costume-making skills and try out some other character concepts. Even after years of creating cosplay content, there’s still a lot more for Mystic Being to explore.
Making Room for Different Body Types in Cosplay
As a plus-size cosplayer, Mystic Being has faced criticism from people who say she shouldn’t cosplay certain characters because of her size. When she portrayed Emma Frost’s Marvel Rivals version, she received thousands of hateful comments about her body.
“You don’t have to look like a character to cosplay them. You don’t need to wait for a different body, a perfect costume, or everyone’s approval,” Mystic Being explains.
A costume doesn’t have to be flawless, and someone doesn’t have to look exactly like the character to enjoy cosplaying them. The approach she takes is simple: just select characters that you love and have fun with them. She continues to follow this belief in how she creates and shares her work.
Creativity Beyond Cosplay
While cosplay is a large portion of Mystic Being’s online persona, it’s not her only interest. She also streams, loves anime and Pokémon, and shares experiences from her travels.
Since she first started creating content on social media in 2020, these interests have become part of the variety of content she shares. Her combined follower count across the platforms now amounts to more than 7 million.
She has also made content creation her full-time career, allowing her to continue exploring the interests that got her online in the first place. She hopes that as she expands her audience, she will be able to reach more people who enjoy entertainment, gaming and creativity.
More Characters, More Creative Possibilities
Mystic Being has already accomplished a lot, but she has some new ideas she would like to pursue.
She would like to portray more characters, continue improving her costume-making skills, continue to stream and share more of her interests with her audience. In addition, she hopes that her content will inspire those who have been reluctant to try cosplay.
Her journey reflects her belief that creativity does not need to conform to a specific style, body shape or experience level. Having portrayed over a hundred characters, Mystic Being is looking forward to exploring more creative ideas.
