The Rise of Nay Palm – A Force in Music Production & Engineering

Lauren “Nay Palm” Bromell is a presence in an industry long dominated by males in both engineering, producing, and musicianship. As a producer, an engineer, and a DJ, she has carved a niche for herself in a field long defined by male presence and prominence. Having moved from drumming with pot and pans in early life to working with producers with a Grammy win under them, Nay Palm is a name to remember.

Early Childhood & Music Beginnings

Nay Palm grew up in Atlanta with a background in early life in terms of music, when at age three, her dad first introduced her to percussion with items in and about her household, and at age four, took her for lessons in piano, and at age six, received a first drumset. Her life in and with music continued, and at age 12, acquired a new skillset with guitar and bass.

Her will to make it saw her join bands in high school, and soon rose through the rank to become captain of the drumline. Her technical and sound skills saw her attend part of her senior year at a technical high school studying Music Technology.

Nay Palm received a grant for a band at Hampton University, studying for a Bachelor of Science in Music Engineer Technology. Her studies, accompanied with hands-on practice, prepared her with expertise to make an impact in the field of music. She soon gained a position in studios post graduation, and in a period of a year, transitioned into working with professionals, mastering techniques, and creating a name for herself.

Shattering Glass Ceilings in a Male-Dominated Industry

The music industry, long male dominated, posed numerous challenges to enter and find success for Nay Palm. She struggled for acceptance, having to prove herself over and over. In the face of biases in the industry, she continued working, proving her talent over and over and over and over again. She faced obstacles, including undermining and manipulation at work and doors in face, but kept moving, earning trust and acceptance in the music industry.

A change in minds in the industry towards female producers and engineers, approximately 2020 and 2021, saw doors opening for female producers and engineers, including for Nay Palm.
