One year ago this past weekend, Birmingham artist Waxahatchee, the project founded by Katie Crutchfield formerly of P.S. Eliot, released her fifth studio album Saint Cloud. A folk-infused turn away her usual sound, Crutchfield explored her Alabama roots with an alternative country type of record. To celebrate the project’s anniversary, Crutchfield played the album in full on a livestream and released an extended version of the album entitled Saint Cloud +3, which featured covers of Dolly Parton, Lucinda Williams, and Bruce Springsteen.
While past Waxahatchee projects have been created around the feelings of certain time or era, Crutchfield based Saint Cloud around the feelings and memories associated with certain places. “It’s always been a big part of the way I write songs, to take people with me to those places,” Crutchfield told Apple Music in 2020. Inspired by female country singers like Williams, Parton, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette, Crutchfield embraced the music of her roots to create a personal, honest record.
Covering these country rock legends on Saint Cloud +3pays greater homage to the music that inspired the critically acclaimed album. Crutchfield produced the tracks alongside Brad Cook and recent Grammy winner Jonathon Low.
