Why Positive People Succeed at Online Dating: 10 Tips to Boost Your Success

By Andrea McGinty

Online dating can sometimes feel like navigating a maze with a blindfold on. With all the swiping, messaging, and occasional awkward encounters, it’s no wonder many people get frustrated. But here’s a little secret: the key to thriving in the world of online dating is positivity. After nearly 30 years as a dating coach, I’ve seen firsthand how a positive outlook can transform your dating experience. Here are ten tips to help you stay upbeat and successful in your quest for love:

1. Forget Finding “The One” and Just Have Fun

Let’s not put all the pressure on finding “The One” right out of the gate. Instead, approach online dating with a mindset of fun and exploration. When you’re relaxed and enjoying the process, you naturally become more attractive and approachable, leading to better connections. Plus, having fun makes the whole experience way more enjoyable!

2. Don’t Become Obsessed with Your Dating App

Online dating can easily turn into a full-time job if you let it. To avoid burnout, limit your dating app usage to three times a week, for about 30 minutes each session. This way, dating remains a fun part-time adventure rather than a daily chore. Balance is key!

3. Acknowledge Dating Fatigue and Take Breaks

Feeling worn out? That’s normal! Take 2-4 weeks off when you feel dating fatigue setting in. A break can help you recharge and return to the scene with a fresh and positive perspective. Remember, the subscription fees are a small price for your mental well-being.

4. Try New Things

Ever heard of the karma principle? It’s true—what you put out in the world comes back to you. So, spice up your life by trying new activities, whether it’s joining a pickleball league, taking a cooking class, or attending a local meetup. New experiences can lead to meeting new people and enhancing your dating life.

5. Concentrate on What You Can Control

Focus on the things you can control—how you spend your time and who you choose to date. By being selective and strategic, you can make your dating experience more enjoyable. And don’t forget, a little dating strategy never hurt anyone!

6. Don’t Take It Personally

It’s easy to get disheartened when a date doesn’t follow up or you don’t get responses to your messages. But don’t let it get to you. There are plenty of potential matches out there who will appreciate you. My mantra? It only takes one connection to turn things around, and I see it happening every week.

7. Don’t Make Dating Your Whole Life

Keep a balanced life by pursuing various hobbies and activities. This not only keeps you interesting but also ensures that your happiness isn’t solely tied to your dating success. A well-rounded life makes you more attractive to potential partners!

8. Lower Your Expectations for First Dates

Approach first dates with zero expectations. This way, you avoid setting yourself up for disappointment. A phone call or text exchange is not a substitute for a real-life date, so keep things in perspective and enjoy the experience for what it is.

9. Refuse to Give Up

Persistence is essential in online dating. While taking breaks is important, don’t give up entirely. Many of my clients have found their partners after numerous dates and a few setbacks. Giving up in the first month is a common mistake—give it three months and stay optimistic!

10. Date Many People

Avoid the trap of assuming that one good date means you’ve found “the one.” Keep dating multiple people until you and a potential partner mutually decide to focus on each other. This approach ensures you’re making well-informed decisions about your relationships.

Online dating might seem like a daunting task, but maintaining a positive outlook and applying these strategies can make a huge difference. By managing your expectations, setting boundaries, and staying upbeat, you can improve your chances of finding lasting, meaningful relationships. And remember, a positive attitude is a trait many of my happily partnered clients share.
