May 14th, 2023 became a memorable day in history for Fresno County bicyclists who joined together to raise awareness of bicycle safety. That day, hundreds of bicyclists gathered together to promote wearing helmets when cycling. An astounding 257 participants both young and old gathered to create the largest online video chain of people wearing and passing along a bicycle helmet, setting an official world record.
The event took place in Woodward Park, Fresno on Mother’s Day, and was organized by representatives of Maison Law. As a personal injury lawyer, Maison Law’s founder, Martin Gasparian has knowledge of the devastating injuries caused by bicycle accidents and understands the importance of helmets in protecting cyclists. To raise awareness of the issue, his team organized the event with hopes to get the message out to cyclists in Fresno and throughout Central Valley.
A Closer Look at the Event and How It Inspired Many
It is no secret that many individuals are affected by bicycle accidents every year. There were 81 bicycle collisions recorded in Fresno in 2022. Members of the Fresno Cycling Club participated in the event. Some of whom have lost loved ones and seen many individuals sustain injuries in cycling accidents throughout the years. Families who have been touched by these incidents shared stories about horrific cycling accidents that led to fractures and traumatic brain injuries. In many of these cases, a helmet saved a life where it could have otherwise been taken.
Along with cyclists throughout Fresno, Councilman Gary Bredefeld was also honored to take part in the event and show his support to local bicyclists. A representative for Maison Law said, “Bicycles are at a natural disadvantage on the roads. Due to their low profile and sleek presence, drivers need to be diligent in looking out for and giving space to cyclists.” They also stated about the community, “This is especially true in cities like Fresno where cyclists not only ride for fun, but also to commute to work and school.”
Especially when bicycle-related accidents involve young children, they are more likely to lead to life-threatening and even fatal results. One mother shared a story about a teenager who fell off of her bike and was left unconscious even though she was wearing a helmet at the time. The mother shared that the daughter was in a coma for a day or two but her injuries could have been much worse if she was not wearing a helmet. With children and teens being the age group most affected by bicycle accidents involving passenger vehicles, safety is of utmost importance and wearing a helmet should always be stressed.
As the helmet was passed from person to person, The Maison Law team shared many laughs realizing that there are wrong ways to wear a helmet and pass it onto the next person. However, as the chain continued, many people found their rhythm. The event was an overall success, as attention to helmet safety was brought to the community and beyond.
