Celebrating the Holidays with Hawaiian Harmony – A Launa’ole Christmas

“Grief is in two parts. The first is loss. The second is the remaking of life.” Anne Roiphe’s words hit differently during the holidays, don’t they? It’s a season full of joy, but for many, there’s a bittersweet edge. Launa’ole, a band based in Lahaina, gets it. Their debut album, A Launa’ole Christmas, is a love letter to their community, especially those still healing from the devastating 2023 Maui wildfires.

The album kicks off with “Mele Kalikimaka ia kākou,” a Hawaiian take on the classic Christmas greeting, setting the stage with its vibrant harmonies. There’s also plenty of fun, like their playful spin on “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Christmas Lū’au.” Then there’s “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” featuring Leah Haywood, which hits you right in the feels with its tender longing. This mix of joy and heartache makes the album feel so real—it’s the holidays, after all.

For Launa’ole, this album was personal. “This entire album is dedicated to the people of Lahaina to bring hope and joy,” says Kumu Hula Koakane Mattos, the band’s founder. The Maui wildfires weren’t just a news story; they were a life-altering tragedy for thousands. Through music, the band aims to remind their community of its strength and resilience, offering a little light during what can be a tough time of year.

The standout track? That would be “The Sweetest Gift,” featuring Isaac Shane Kahalehau. It’s one of those songs that stops you in your tracks. “Christmas really hurts this time / Cause you’re not here to celebrate with me…” These lines are a gut punch, but there’s also comfort in knowing that love and memories endure. It’s sad, but in the best way, like it’s helping you process something you didn’t have words for.

Launa’ole’s journey started in 2020, during the height of the pandemic. Mattos, along with musicians Brandon Hirata and Kason Gomes, came together almost by accident, but their chemistry was undeniable. What began as a small, hopeful project quickly grew into something bigger. Their shared mission is to create music filled with laughter, love, and the spirit of Hawaii.

When the time came to make this album, they pulled out all the stops. Multi-award-winning producer Dave Tucciarone and engineer Demitri Marmash brought their expertise to the table, while the band infused every track with their unique blend of island rhythms and heartfelt melodies. A polished album is the result that still feels deeply personal.

Deciding to go with a Christmas theme for their debut was a bold move, but it paid off. Holiday music has this universal appeal, and Launa’ole wanted to create something that would bring people together. “We just said, ‘Let’s make an album,’” Mattos recalls. “It felt right—like the perfect way to start this new chapter.

“Mele Kalikimaka ia ‘oe” and “Jingle Bells” get a fresh, Hawaiian twist, blending the old with the new in a way that feels both familiar and exciting. It’s clear the band poured their hearts into every note, creating something that’s as much about celebration as it is about healing.

As for what’s next, Launa’ole isn’t slowing down. This is just the beginning for the group, who are already looking ahead to future projects. “We want to share hope, joy, and laughter with as many people as we can,” Gomes says. “Music has a way of bringing people together, and that’s what we’re all about.”
