Japanese Breakfast Announces New Album Jubilee, Shares Lead Single “Be Sweet”

Michelle Zauner, who performs under the stage name Japanese Breakfast, has announced the release date of her newest album, Jubilee.

Set for release on June 4th via Dead Oceans, Zauner also shared the video for the album’s first single, “Be Sweet”. Jubilee will be Zauner’s first album since 2017’s Soft Sounds from Another Planet

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Zauner described her intended sentiment with her new album. “After spending the last five years writing about grief, I wanted our follow-up to be about joy,” she shared. Zauner continued, “The songs are about recalling the optimism of youth and applying it to adulthood. They’re about making difficult choices, fighting ignominious impulses and honoring commitments, confronting the constant struggle we have with ourselves to be better people.”

Heavily inspired by records like Bjork’s Homogenic, the new Japanese Breakfast record will feature Zauner embracing ambition with big ideas and even bigger sonics. Jubilee will come only a few weeks after the release of Zauner’s upcoming memoir Crying in H Mart, which is set to hit shelves on April 20th. The book is an extension of a piece Zauner wrote for The New Yorker back in 2018.
