Montreal singer-songwriter Le Ren and Big Thief’s Buck Meek, who is fresh off the release of his debut solo record Two Saviors, have teamed up for a cover of the Gordon Lightfoot classic, “Early Morning Rain”.
Released via Royal Mountain Records and Secretly Canadian, the cover is a slowed down, folk-influenced version of the 1966 track.
In a statement from Le Ren, aka Lauren Spear, she shared the cover felt necessary with the state of mind many people are facing today. “To me, this song encapsulates missing someone. As many people are separated right now, it felt like the right moment to cover it.” Spear added: “Buck and I recorded it in two different countries across time and space so in turn, the production reflects the song itself.”
With “Early Morning Rain” being Le Ren and Buck Meek’s first collaboration, their chemistry on the song feels like it was made from a bond of lifelong musical partners. The duo’s adjacent tendencies and sonic stylings allow for their vocals to intertwine into something singular.
Le Ren is now 6 months removed from 2020’s Morning & Melancholia – EP, and she hasn’t skipped a beat in the elapsed time. Listen to Le Ren and Buck Meek’s joint cover of the Gordon Lightfoot classic below.
