Munr Kazmir and The American Jewish Congress Host 33rd Annual Mayors Conference in Israel

Jerusalem, Israel – In 2019, Munr Kazmir and the American Jewish Congress (AJC) convened its 33rd Annual Mayors Conference in Israel, solidifying its position as a significant gathering for the Jewish community. Over the years, mayors and delegates from around the world have been invited to come together in Israel for a week of engaging discussions, meetings, and sightseeing, creating a platform for local representatives to address urban issues, exchange solutions, and foster stronger ties between cities. In 2019, the 33rd edition took place from February 24th to February 28th across various cities in Israel.

The primary objectives of the 33rd Annual Mayors Conference encompassed facilitating dialogue and tackling challenges faced by Jewish communities worldwide. Notably, the AJC, which was led by their President Jack Rosen and Vice Chairman Munr Kazmir, successfully initiated collaborations between mayors and local government officials, delving into shared challenges, exploring urban development approaches, and fostering international partnerships and cooperation among participating groups.

Kazmir was successful in having the conference yield several tangible outcomes, including the establishment of knowledge-exchanging networks, the identification of urban development technologies, and the development of a resolution highlighting key priorities for officials while condemning acts of anti-Semitism.

During the conference, the delegations were led by Munr Kazmir, Vice Chairman of the American Jewish Congress, accompanied by President Jack Rosen and other AJC board members. Kazmir, who has been involved with the American Jewish Congress since 2012 and assumed the position of Vice Chairman in 2016, had previously led such delegations on two occasions. His extensive experience includes working with organizations such as the Republican Jewish Coalition, Rabbinical College of America, American Council of World Jewry, Anti-Defamation League, American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (JINSA). Additionally, Kazmir has been recognized by Keren Or for his remarkable contributions.

Under Dr. Kazmir’s guidance, the conference ran smoothly, ensuring the participation of numerous high-profile individuals. Distinguished attendees included the Prime Minister of Israel, the Mayor of Tel Aviv, the Mayor of Jerusalem, and the Mayor of Pittsburgh.

One of the most poignant moments of the 33rd Annual Mayors Conference stemmed from former Mayor of Pittsburgh, Bill Peduto. In the wake of the tragic Tree of Life synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh, Mayor Peduto attended the conference and paid tribute to the victims by planting an olive tree in Israel as a symbol of peace. This act garnered significant media attention and exemplified the American Jewish Congress’s commitment to supporting the Jewish community.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Jewish Congress has been unable to organize subsequent conferences since the 33rd edition. However, Vice Chairman Munr Kazmir has publicly expressed his anticipation for future conferences.

The AJC’s Annual Mayors Conferences serve as a vital platform for mayors and local government officials to collectively address challenges encountered by the Jewish community. By fostering international cooperation and sharing knowledge, these conferences contribute to the development of urban solutions and the promotion of Jewish interests worldwide.
