Thor Moreno’s VOODUN: A Gritty Supernatural Thriller Redefining Fear

Award-winning director Thor Moreno is back; this time, he’s diving into the dark, supernatural world with VOODUN. Set for a spring 2025 release, the film has already established itself as a global success, winning Best Picture at both the Berlin and Melbourne Film Festivals. Based on Jan Walters’s haunting novel Hazzard Avenue, VOODUN is a gripping blend of crime, horror, and the supernatural, promising to leave audiences terrified and captivated.

The story follows Detective Brett O’Shea (Eric Guilmette), a seasoned investigator assigned to what initially appears to be a routine missing person case in a small Midwestern city. However, the investigation takes a chilling turn when O’Shea uncovers a connection to a serial killer wielding supernatural powers rooted in the arcane practice of voodoo. As the line between reality and the otherworldly blurs, O’Shea faces a relentless predator and his own fears and doubts in a heart-pounding fight for survival.

Thor Moreno, known for his psychological depth and atmospheric tension in films like Schism and When Jack Came Back, aimed to create an immersive, disorienting experience with VOODUN. “My goal while making this film was to create a sense of disorientation,” Moreno explains. “The fear of being stuck somewhere terrifying with no way to get to safety was the vibe here.”

Moreno’s creative choices add to the film’s unique atmosphere. Drawing inspiration from classic horror films of the 1970s, VOODUN incorporates vintage lenses from the 60s, period-appropriate vehicles, and carefully selected locations to evoke a timeless yet surreal feeling. The result is a film that nods to the golden age of horror while offering modern audiences a fresh and chilling perspective.

Fans of psychological and supernatural horror will not want to miss the opportunity to experience VOODUN. Watch the trailer here:
